Award:

The Edward H. Bean
Award in recognition of efforts by a member institution in the management and
husbandry of various animal species in their care:
Winner: Waikiki Aquarium, Honolulu, Hawai'i, for their Long-term Tropical Pacific
Coral Propagation Program;
Significant Achievement:
Tulsa Zoo & Living Museum, Oklahoma, for their Aldabra Tortoise Breeding
Program;
The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, Ohio, for their Long-term Propagation
and Captive Management of the Leaf-cutting Ant.
The Education
Award for a program based on its ability to promote conservation knowledge,
attitudes and behavior, show innovation, and measure success:
Winner: Chicago Zoological Society, Illinois, for their "To Save a Species:
Managing a Captive Population" program
Significant Achievement:
South
Carolina Aquarium, Charleston, South Carolina, for their "Structured School
Program;"
National Aviary, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for their "Connecting
the Classroom: Educating People About the Wonders of Birds via the World Wide
Web."
The North
American Conservation Award for exceptional efforts by institutions toward regional
habitat preservation, species restoration, and support of biodiversity in the
wild:
Winner: The Toledo Zoo, Ohio, for their "Oak Savanna Butterfly Conservation
Program."
Significant Achievement:
Memphis Zoo, Tennessee, for their "Conservation of the Louisiana
Pine Snake and its habitat" program;
"Mexican Gray Wolf Recovery Program," a coalition of 15 AZA
members. The institutions that participate are: Albuquerque Biological Park,
New Mexico; Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Tucson, Arizona; Cheyenne Mountain
Zoo, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Ohio; Dakota Zoo,
Bismark, North Dakota; El Paso Zoo, Texas; Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, Glen
Rose, Texas; The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, Palm Desert, California; Minnesota
Zoological Garden, Apple Valley, Minnesota; Smithsonian's National Zoological
Park, District of Columbia; Phoenix Zoo, Arizona; Sedgwick County Zoo, Wichita,
Kansas; Utica Zoo, New York; Wild Canid Survival and Research Center, Eureka,
Missouri; and Zoo New England, Boston, Massachusetts.
The International
Conservation Award:
"Rodrigues Fruit Bat Conservation Program," a coalition of 10
AZA accredited zoos. The institutions that participate are: The Philadelphia
Zoo, Pennsylvania; Oregon Zoo; Disney's Animal Kingdom, Florida; Woodland Park
Zoo, Seattle, Washington; Roger Williams Park Zoo, Providence, Rhode Island;
Blank Park Zoo, Des Moines, Iowa; John Ball Zoo, Grand Rapids, Michigan; Riverbanks
Zoo, Columbia, South Carolina; Folsom Children's Zoo, Lincoln, Nebraska; and
the Biodome de Montreal, Canada.
The Exhibit Award
for excellence in animal display:
Winner: Louisville Zoo, Kentucky for their Gorilla Habitat
Significant Achievement:
The
Detroit Zoological Institute, Michigan, for their "Arctic Ring of Life"
exhibit;
The Monterey Bay Aquarium, California, for their "Jellies: Living
Art."
The Munson Aquatic
Conservation Exhibitry Award (M.A.C.E. Award) for excellence in aquatic exhibits
that have conservation education incorporated into the design and presentation
(always two winners):
Waikiki Aquarium, Honolulu, Hawai'i, for their "South Pacific Marine
Communities" exhibit;
John G. Shedd Aquarium, Chicago, Illinois, for their exhibit, "Wild
Reef, Sharks at Shedd."
